Title: Sunday, 26 October
Tags: computer site boring
Blog Entry: I’m sitting here, Sunday afternoon, sucking Chivas Regal through a straw because I’m not allowed to drink too much. Just a few sips. So I’m making each sip count. Across the continent, Walrus is sitting in front of his computer playing with the new site and becoming frustrated with the inability to overcome a small RE: RE: RE: issue with IM. Back the other way, MC57 has stopped sending jokes, a feat copied by 33A. Did I mention how boring it is? The weather forecast was that there would be 25kt + winds and two metre waves with two metre swells. There is a light 3-7kt breeze, blue skies and the sea is flat. So like all the other boaties here in Adelaide, I’m sitting at my computer looking at my boat in the car port. Of course, one can always take the chance and go out anyway, but if it turns five minutes after arriving, it’s a waste of fuel. And now that Cockles or pipis as some know them, are an overseas delicacy, the cost of a 50 lb bag has gone from $55 to $158, who wants to waste bait and berley? Had dinner with the Brigadier last night, oh and Mrs Brigadier. He’s okay but she tends to wear his rank, even unto the gym. Spoke of many things and he was a fount of information about one or two issues. Prime topic of discussion though, was the US decision to replace the M16 and the M4 with a new rifle, which in the US has reignited the 55.6 versus the 7.62 debate. But interestingly, the 6.5 and the 6.8 have entered the fray as well. Seems there are some very positive words for a new sniper rifle and high on the “I want one of those” lists is the M110 by Knight's Armament Company. In the rifle field, there is word that the 6.8mm Remington SPC (6.8 X 43mm) is looking good with those who have trialled it. It is midway between the 5.56 and 7.62 in bore and velocity, but with more energy. Remember the Barrett AR15. This has succumbed to the pressure of Colt who now believes they can manufacture a better knock-down 5.56, equal to the 6.8, so the US doesn’t have to change weapons. Where were they 40 years ago? As much as I enjoy these discussions with Brian, it is the stupidity of weather forecasting that most unsettles me. And my boat, safe and snug in the car port, still dreams of breasting the waves, feeling the spray of the sea across her foredeck and the hum of her 90hp Johnson chewing up fuel at the rate of one litre per kilometre. But time is precious and can not be reclaimed. Money can.
