I agree with both of you. One only has to have a gander at the 2 Neptunes at RAAF Base Garbut on Ingam Rd to see the poor old girls are on their last legs.
Couldn't agree more re the care of display aircraft, Stump.
Some of the aircraft that have been allowed to deteriorate outside our bases are a disgrace to the units that are supposed to maintain them.
There is a rather good Spitfire mounted at the entrance to the RAAF Association's retirement homes at Bullcreek in Perth. I will get a photo shortly.
The RAAFA Museum has a magnificently restored Lancaster bomber amongst many other vintage to modern aircraft and a mob of enthusiastic old airmen volunteers who love to bend your ear about everything from aerodynamics to radio procedure.
Magnificent memorial - hard to see the mount at this angle (or has it been photoshopped out?).
Main point is this looks heaps better than the derelict aircraft we have at bases - if you are going to display them as part of our heritage then make sure they look good I reckon!
After another successful Diggers Reunion (in the City of Churches), the decision has been made to hold the tenth anniversary reunion in Alice Springs - weekend of October 1-4, 2010. Make no small plans!
