Report to the AGM - August 2008

2008 is the busiest year the Sqn has seen in recent history, I think I will quickly become to most travelled OC whilst in command, having already been to Tasmania working on the raising of the 4th Troop. I have visited Sydney and Darwin and the Corp Conference in Puckapunyal and the year is only half done!

The Sqn has also maintained its normal training regime as much as possible, with personal attending a multitude of courses in various parts of the country. We are about to conduct adventure training (white water rafting) in Victoria at the end of August. The raising of the 4th Tp in Tasmania has become a difficult task and the Sqn was requested help on the ground in Hobart to keep momentum. We have been allocated ten (10) recruiting positions on top of the fifteen (15) we have in central region to get it started… "Wait out" on this one.

I attended the RAAC Corps conference early this month in Puckapunyal, where many interesting things were discussed, most to do with current Operations and Future capabilities (for obvious reason I cannot elaborate). The main topic effecting the Sqn was the HRR commitment, which is still to be finalised, but it is most likely to be in support of 2/14 LH (QMI) in a combined Tp with 4/19 PWLH. The Sqn was also directed to maintain its skills in both mounted and dismounted Cavalry operational and utilise the current suit of vehicles as best as possible, as a future replacement is some time off. It is interesting to note, when I attended my first Corps Conference in 1998, there were no RAAC units working on Ops. This year all units including the Reserve Lt Cav units have a commitment to at least two overseas Ops/deployments. The Corps is at a very high tempo and this will continue for some time.

Regards,

Major Hamish McKendrick
Officer Commanding
